FREE Photo Sites for You

We've all heard the phrase "Pictures are worth a thousand words" ...so why not embrace that concept and try to incorporate images into everything we are working on -- PowerPoints, blog posts, websites, handouts, homework assignments... you name it. But to do so, it's important to realize that some images are off-limits. That's why I asked my Twitter PLN (Personal Learning Network) what copyright-friendly photo websites were available for educators and students to use.
The following sites are great for teachers and students to find images and use them for FREE:
- Pics4Learning
- stock.xchng
- Public Domain Photos
- FreeFoto
- NOAA Photo Library

- Classroom Clipart
- Karen's Whimsy
- FreeDigitalPhotos
- MorgueFile
- Photos8
- FreePixels
- FotoPedia
- PhotoHome
- PD Photo
- StockVault
- Student Clip Art
- EveryStockPhoto
- Phillip Martin ClipArt
- List of Copyright "Friendly" Images for Student Use
**Children should always be careful when searching on the Internet, so please use with caution. The sites above all provide images for free, but some inappropriate images may not filter through.
If you know of any other free photo sites, please list them down below in the comments!

Thanks for those links, it is always tricky finding images searches for children. I also teach my students how to search for creative commons on Flickr and what to do should they see something inappropriate (we can’t hide everything).
is another new Flickr group building this type of resource.
I have also started a Flickr group (starting 2011) where students can practice and share their photography with other students. We encourage using creative commons so they images may be reused and mashed.

I think you need to check your list more carefully before branding it “safe” for students and teachers. I suppose it depends upon how you define safe, but Number 17 on your list :Everystockphoto is not a site I would want my students to go near. It was very easy to find by accident several unacceptable images that were not blocked by our software. This has served to remind me that I need to be ever vigilant even on a site that I thought I could trust.
If you’d like to take and share photos of your classroom and students with parents and others in a highly private and permission-based way, check out our site Lifesnapz.com (http;//wwww.lifesnapz.com). The site is free to use.
People are also welcome to use the free royalty free photos and images available on http://www.cjophoto.com/. The site is safe and easy to use for children and their parents.
